Is Melbourne Cup Day a public holiday in Albury Wodonga? How the border splits it

Melbourne Cup Day is a normal working day in Albury under the NSW calendar. Wodonga's local holiday is on Wodonga Gold Cup day in late November, though businesses there can take Cup Day instead.

Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November 2026, is a normal working day in Albury. Wodonga's local holiday is on Wodonga Gold Cup day, Friday 27 November 2026, though businesses there can choose either day. By our count, from 3 November to 27 November, the two race days sit 24 days apart.

So a guest who crosses the Murray in Cup week finds one town on NSW weekday arrangements. The other is in Victoria, where businesses can take their race holiday on Cup Day or on Gold Cup day in late November. This is how Albury Wodonga Motels reads the split for anyone planning a stay on the Border.

How does the border split Melbourne Cup Day?

The river is the line. Albury, on the NSW side, follows the NSW public holiday list, which has no Cup Day. Wodonga, on the Victorian side, sits under Fair Work's Victorian list, which names 3 November but allows regional areas to hold the holiday on another date.

One thing does not change across the bridge: the clock. Both towns are on AEDT, because daylight saving began on Sunday 4 October 2026 in NSW and Victoria alike.

No. The NSW 2026 public holiday list goes from Labour Day, Monday 5 October, straight to Christmas Day. Fair Work's NSW list is the same.

Melbourne Cup Day is not a public holiday in NSW: it is not on the NSW list, so Albury shops and services should run to normal weekday arrangements, though individual businesses may vary.

For a guest, that matters in two ways. If you are on the Border for work, Cup Day on the Albury side is an ordinary Tuesday, and our guide to work stays and the records to keep applies as usual. If you are here for the race, plan your afternoon around a working town, not a holiday one.

Is Melbourne Cup Day a public holiday in Wodonga?

"Tuesday 3 November: Melbourne Cup (some regional areas in Victoria hold the Melbourne Cup public holiday on a different date)"

Fair Work Ombudsman, 2026 public holidays

Not in the usual way. It is a mistake to think Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday all over Victoria: Wodonga is one of the exceptions.

The Border Mail reports that since 2014, Wodonga businesses have been able to take a holiday on either Melbourne Cup Day or Wodonga Gold Cup Day. Racing Wodonga describes the City of Wodonga enjoying a public holiday on Gold Cup day, 27 November.

Business Wodonga's chief executive told the Border Mail that the majority of members shut on Wodonga Cup Day, while a small number still support the statewide Melbourne Cup holiday. He said the exact number of businesses taking the local holiday is unknown, so on Cup Day some Wodonga doors may be closed. Check with the venue before you count on it.

Put the two days side by side and the pattern is simple. Cup Day is a Flemington meeting you watch from the Border, with first race at 10.45am and last at 5.15pm. Gold Cup day is the Border's own meeting at Picklebet Park, from 11:30. It is also the day Wodonga takes off.

Neither day is a NSW public holiday, because the NSW list has nothing between Labour Day and Christmas.

Where to watch the Melbourne Cup in Albury Wodonga

Tue 3 Nov 2026, in AEDT for both towns

  1. 10.45am First race at Flemington
  2. 11:00 Ovens Ford Melbourne Cup Day Races at Wangaratta

  4. 5.15pm Last race at Flemington

The Cup itself is scheduled for about 3pm AEDT, as Race 7 of 10 over 3200m. Treat that as a guide and check the official race-day program for final times. Because both towns share AEDT, 3pm in Albury is 3pm in Wodonga.

Pubs and clubs are a popular place to watch. For 2026, The Bended Elbow at 480 Dean Street listed every race on big screens, with bookings available. Commercial Club Albury listed a Melbourne Cup Calcutta for the Monday night before, 5pm to 8.30pm in the Zodiac Lounge, with tickets $2 each (checked October 2026). These are examples of what venues do around Cup Day, not a full list. Hours and bookings change from year to year, so check with the venue and book your table early.

If you would rather be trackside, country racing runs on Cup Day too. Wangaratta is holding the Ovens Ford Melbourne Cup Day Races from 11:00 on 3 November 2026.

The Picklebet Wodonga Gold Cup runs on Friday 27 November 2026 from 11:30 at Picklebet Park. It is the Border's own race day, and the easiest way there costs nothing.

Free buses run from Wodonga's Raiders Football Ground and from Albury's Botanic Gardens bus stop at QE2 Square, Dean Street. Return buses leave the racecourse at 6:45pm, with a second Wodonga service at 6:55pm.

General admission is $25 pre-purchased or $30 at the gate (checked October 2026). Buying ahead is the cheaper way in, which adds up quickly for a group. Our group booking tips help if you are bringing one.

Take the bus and leave the car. And if the betting stops being fun, the help line shown on Commercial Club Albury's Calcutta page is 1800 858 858.

Planning a stay around the two race days

Cup Day falls on a Tuesday, so a Monday-to-Wednesday stay gives you the race without a rushed drive either side. With the Cup scheduled for about 3pm, sort your check-in, check-out and any time on the road so you are not mid-trip at the start.

Gold Cup day is a Friday. For Wodonga locals it turns into a long weekend, and for visitors it pairs well with a weekend on the Border.

If you are visiting family on the Wodonga side, ask which day they actually have off. Under the either-day arrangement, it is more likely to be 27 November than 3 November. Families juggling schools on both sides will find the same NSW and Victorian split in our school holidays guide.

The split is not a one-off. Wodonga's holiday has been extended through 2031 and renamed "Wodonga Day" from 2027. The dates are 26 November 2027, 24 November 2028, 30 November 2029, 29 November 2030 and 28 November 2031. Every one is a Friday late in November, so you can pencil in future Border long weekends now.

Booking a stay around either race day

Pick your race first. For Cup Day, a Monday to Wednesday stay works well, with Albury on a normal working day. For the Gold Cup, a Friday into the weekend suits, as many Wodonga businesses take the day. Then book with the motel itself and tell them which race you are coming for. Our guide to booking direct with motels in Albury covers how.
